Monroe: Graceful steps in Nagras

by Rajnin Farzana

Monroe is a shoe brand that has recently introduced customers with its unique and intricate fashion statements. With the craftsmanship of the local artisans, Monroe is focusing on manufacturing chic and elegant looking designer nagras. It has products as attractive as its name and brings something that is not very common in town.

The name Monroe was inspired by the legendary Hollywood actress and fashion icon Marilyn Monroe. Sahar Rahman, designer of Monroe, says that Marilyn Monroe is the kind of beauty whose everlasting grace charms us generation after generation.  The modernity of her style never fades away and she is considered to be the epitome of femininity. The aura of Marilyn Monroe inspired them to pick the name as they tend to design shoes that are unique, modern, graceful and very feminine in nature. Monroe’s name was chosen as the name of the brand as a theme, not as a design inspiration.

‘I am not inspired by any particular fashion movement or tradition rather the designs come naturally to my mind,’ says Sahar when asked about her inspiration.

Monroe is the brainchild of Sahar Rahman, Amana Rahman and Badria Anis. The Rahman sisters are running Sahar Rahman Store, a clothing line where they observed that many of their female customers opt for a pair of beautiful matching nagras with their outfit but nagras are not easily available in Dhaka. Along with Badria, a friend who is also a shoe exporter, they planned for a year and finally came up with the idea of Monroe. In Monroe, customers have the option to customize and all their products are made to order.

What does Monroe have to offer us? Monroe brings to you their specially produced handcrafted series of leather khussas/nagras in which contemporary designs and traditional karigari are mingled with a touch of ethnicity. Classic nagras are crafted with modern tradition for all ages of women in Monroe. Each pair of shoe is designed with artisanal craftsmanship. They are fancy and comfortable at the same time as the designer herself tests the ‘feel’ of each product.

Monroe offers a range of brightly coloured, beautifully embroidered and stone studded shoes which can be worn for celebrating festive occasions or summer getaways. The shoes are designed to fit like pumps or ballerinas and hence Monroe khussas are very comfortable whether it is for a marriage ceremony or for regular usage.

They are selling designer nagras – made of both local and imported fabric and leather. Stones and other embeliishments are mostly imported but the flats are crafted here in Bangladesh by the local master craftsmen. Floral, embroidered, zardozi and stone studded khussas are available here in sizes between 35 to 40 and the price of the shoes range between Tk 2,800 to Tk 4,800.

Each pair of shoe is named distinctively as they are manufactured with a sense of uniqueness. Black swan, Ocean flower, Mayfair and lavender blossom are some of the popular juttis here. While ‘Mayfair’ khussas are classy, sophisticated and dressy with their silver, white and beige combination, ‘Blacksawn’ has elegant silver on black embellishments on them.

They are accepting orders through Facebook or instagram. They take two weeks to get the products ready after placing the order and then call the customers to collect the shoes. Or one can pick them up from Sahar Rahman Store as well to try out sample sizes.

Sahar Rahman Store,  House 11/A, Road 68. Gulshan 2 (behind American club).
