‘Colours from the Chars’ – woven by women from the chars

The first display centre of ‘Colors from the Chars’ by Friendship was inaugurated on May 8 at the Friendship Head Office in Dhaka. Present on the occasion were founder and executive director, Runa Khan; assistant airector of Colors from the Chars Najra Mahajaben Sabet and many others.
There are very few economic opportunities in the remote chars of Gaibandha or Kurigram. In the absence of employment, the underprivileged women in these chars, have no social standing and are often married off early and remain uneducated and stuck at home. Friendship established several weaving centres to negate this trend and offer these women a means of income as well skill development. These women now hand weaves these traditional, artisanal fabrics and clothes, so that buyers around the world wear them. Available at the display center are hand-woven scarves, shawls, gamchas, unstitched salwar kameez and miniature replicas of Bengal’s traditional sailboats built by skilled craftsmen.
